Cozumel, Mexico: Friday October 25, 2013
40 today!!!!!
After a restless night, we docked in Cozumel to find two other cruise ships in Port: the Carnival Magic and the Carnival Conquest. And to pretty steady rain.
Birthday dinner was held at the Windjammer and then off to Cozumel we went. Flick being the only sensible one with a raincoat. After a quick look at the shops, where the purchase of a change of clothes to replace our sopping wet ones was considered, we organised a taxi tour of the island with Juan. Included in our trip were the El Centro ruins, a couple of beach bars and then lunch.
Lunch consisted of chips, salsa and guacamole, fish cerviche and fish fajitas. All washed down with margaritas.
We continued our tour around the island with a quick stop off for shopping and then did a tequila tasting tour. We were informed about all of the steps involved and the. Got to the good part: the tasting! We tried soursop, piña colada, pomegranate and coffee tequila. Then onto the proper stuff, a seven and a twelve year old tequila. When buying tequila, you need to look for the following:
- 100% agave
- 750 ml bottle
- Certification on it (Cert)
- The name of the town, state and country it was made in, and
- 38% alcohol content
Although really good tequila, the prices were outrageous so no purchases made. Our excursion with Juan ended on a sour note when he quibbled with the arranged price. Sigh.
Shopping at the port and back to the ship where Katie was very insistent that I go to the pool. Turns out Ben, Amber, Flick, Mos and KT had organised to have my room (well Katie's and my room) decorated and "flowers" delivered. This is why there guys are my friends!!!
As the Carnival Conquest departed, I was encouraged to put on a show for them. 'Nuff said.
Pre-birthday dinner drinks were held in the Champagne Bar and then it was the MDR for dinner again. Tonight was shiitake night, which everyone felt was fitting. Seafood ceviche and shrimp gyoza for dinner. Bloody awesome!!!
While we were waiting to order dessert, I was totally distracted by the head maître de, June, thanking us for our patronage over the last few night and was totally startled when a birthday cake was thrust in front of me. A FANTASTICALLY AWESOME surprise!!!! Thanks everyone!! And thanks to Katie for single handed lay eating about half of the cake!!
Tonight was the first night that Katie and I had proper chats. Most nights we have just fallen into bed exhausted from our "busy" days. But tonite, we were able to have a good chat and she helped to round out a memorable fortieth birthday!!!!
Ben and Amber's bat towel and our sloth.....
Happy birthday, Me!!!!
